ISRI Virtual Events: ISRI 2020 Shredder Operations Forum

The ISRI Fall 2020 Shredder Operation, a two-day virtual event, is designed for those who are involved in the safe and efficient day-to-day operations of shredders as well as for those who want a better understanding of the issues and challenges shredders face in the scrap recycling industry.

“Virtualized” to meet the needs of attendees, the first day will focus on general maintenance, cost of shredding, and function. The second day includes not one but two recorded facility tours of two very different shredders, Tri State Iron and Metal’s facility in Arkansas and SA Recycling’s Terminal Island facility in California. Representatives from both facilities will be on hand for panel discussion and a live Q&A session.

General Shredder Maintenance with Focus on Rotor and Hydraulics

The rotor is the workhorse of the shredder operation and proper maintenance is critical to its function and life. Attendees will be presented a number of topics on prolonging the life of rotors through proper maintenance. There will also be discussion on fluid cleanliness and general maintenance of the hydraulic system that have a direct impact on downtime and cost of ownership. This covers an often overlooked aspect of the shredder operation is the maintenance of the hydraulic system.

Whether planning for a new downstream or retrofitting an existing system, those attending will gain insight into the latest in ferrous downstream designs and the newest technologies available.

How to Have a Happy and Successful Shredding Plant

This presentation will illustrate problems at shredding plants and will suggest solutions. The “broken window syndrome” will be discussed as it applies to shredding plant operations. Then attendees will hear about ways to improve production efficiency and profitability by lowering operating costs and by increasing tons per hour.  There have been evolutionary improvements to shredding plant operation through better computer controls which operate the plant and which provide better management data. We will explore the actual value of one minute worth of production, which when understood, provides meaningful motivation to adopt a policy of constant improvement.

Virtual Facility Tour of Tri-State Iron & Metal Company

Tri-State Iron and Metal is a 3rd generation shredding facility owned and operated by the Glick family. Established in 1947 by Morde Glick, Tri-State Iron & Metal is still located in its original location in Texarkana, AR. Installed in 2008 and fully online in 2009, Tri-State’s shredder is a Harris Shredder HS-80115, with a 3,000 horsepower drive system, capable of 70-80 tons per hour. This shredder is completely upgradeable to achieve an even higher throughput rate. Tri-State is able to process any type of material, no matter how large or small. Virtual Facility Tour of SA Recycling

SA Recycling’s Terminal Island facility has been serving the public and industry since 1962. Located in the Port of Los Angeles, this facility holds a 9,000-horsepower Mega Shredder that turns a car into hand-sized pieces of recyclable materials in 10 seconds, which has increased production between 250 to 400 tons per hour.

From the Shredder downstream, ferrous and nonferrous materials are sorted through various types of magnetic separation techniques. This technology enables the separation of additional commodities like aluminum, copper, and insulated copper wire (ICW). The process continues as a 144-ton fully electric crane loads the recyclables directly into shipping vessels for international export.
